Learn the step-by-step process to transfer ownership on Google Drive effortlessly. Manage your folder or files efficiently with our user-friendly guide.
If you’ve ever found yourself juggling multiple Google accounts, you’re not alone. Many of us maintain separate accounts for various purposes, from work to personal projects, leading to occasional mix-ups in file placement. Fortunately, transferring ownership of a Google Drive folder or file is a feasible solution. Let’s dive into the process and make this seemingly complex task a breeze.
Share the Folder or File for Seamless Transition
Before initiating the ownership transfer, you must share the folder or file with the intended new owner. Follow these simple steps:
- Right-click on the folder or file you want to share.
- Select Share > Share from the context menu.
- In the Add people and groups field, input the name or email address of the person you wish to share it with.
Navigate the Ownership Switch
Now, let’s tackle the core task—shifting the responsibility to a different Google account:
- Right-click on the folder or file in question and again select Share > Share.
- Click on the small triangle next to the name or email address of the intended new owner.
- In the drop-down menu, opt for Transfer ownership.
A pop-up will prompt you to confirm the ownership transfer. Select Send invitation to proceed.
New Owner Acceptance
If you are the potential new owner, an email titled “Invitation to own [file or folder name]” will arrive. The email includes buttons to accept or decline ownership, with a caution about potential storage usage.
If the email is not visible, you can alternatively:
- Go to Google Drive and click on the shared folder or file, accessible through the Shared with me link in the left-hand menu.
- At the top of the page, find the icon with two people, indicating shared content. Click on the icon.
- A pop-up window will display you as the potential new owner. Click on the button labeled Accept ownership? and choose between Decline or Accept on the subsequent pop-up.
Congratulations! As the new owner, you’ll be officially listed as the owner of the folder or file, and the previous owner will receive an email notification.
Addressing Ownership Glitches
There’s a slight glitch to be aware of: changing the ownership of a folder doesn’t automatically update the files within it. To rectify this, you can individually change the ownership of each file or opt for a more efficient solution:
- Utilize Google Takeout for the original account.
- Click on Deselect all at the top, scroll down to Drive, and check it.
- Click on All Drive data included, uncheck Include all files and folders in Drive, and select the specific folder for download.
- Proceed to Next step, choose export formats, and select Create export.
- You’ll receive a notification when the export is ready. Import it into your desired Drive account and, once confirmed, delete it from the original account.
By following these comprehensive steps, you can smoothly manage ownership transfers on Google Drive, ensuring an organized and hassle-free experience.
