Apple Intelligence is set to expand significantly with Apple’s 2027 software updates, bringing more server-powered AI features to users. But that expansion will come with a catch: Apple plans to introduce usage limits for several of its more demanding AI tools.
Apple says the limits are intended to keep its AI services fast and reliable as more people use them. For users, however, it means some Apple Intelligence features may no longer be available without restrictions.
Which Apple Intelligence Features Will Have Usage Limits?
The planned limits will apply primarily to features that require significant cloud processing.
Siri AI is among the services affected. Apple is also applying limits to newer image-editing capabilities, including Clean Up, Extend and Spatial Reframing.
Image Playground will also be subject to usage limits. The restrictions extend to the AFM 3 Cloud and AFM 3 Cloud Pro models available through Shortcuts.
Developers aren’t completely exempt, either. Apps using Apple’s Foundation Models through Private Cloud Compute will operate within the same broader usage framework.
That means the limits won’t be restricted to consumer-facing Apple Intelligence features. Developers building AI-powered experiences using Apple’s cloud infrastructure will also need to account for them.
What Happens When You Reach the Limit?
Reaching an Apple Intelligence usage limit doesn’t mean the feature is permanently disabled.
Instead, Apple says users will have to wait for a timeout period before they can use the feature again. The length of that wait can vary depending on several factors.
These include:
- Which Apple Intelligence feature you’re using
- How complex the request is
- Current demand on Apple’s servers
- Apple’s usage policies at the time
In other words, there won’t necessarily be one fixed reset period for every AI feature.
Users who don’t want to wait will have another option: paying for expanded access.
Apple hasn’t yet provided all the details surrounding that paid access, including exactly how pricing will work across the different features.
Apple Already Uses a Similar System in Home
Usage limits aren’t completely new to Apple’s ecosystem.
The Home app already places limits on video summaries generated from compatible security cameras based on a user’s iCloud+ subscription.
Under the current structure, an iCloud+ plan with 2TB of storage supports one camera, while the 6TB plan supports two cameras. The 12TB plan increases the limit to five cameras.
Apple notes that these limits can change over time, offering a preview of how its subscription-based approach to AI and cloud processing could evolve.
The Limits Are Coming as Apple Intelligence Expands
Apple’s decision comes as Apple Intelligence becomes a larger part of its software ecosystem.
The company’s iOS 27 update, scheduled to arrive on September 14, introduces the long-awaited overhaul of Siri for supported iPhones.
The redesigned assistant is expected to understand more complex requests and, more importantly, handle tasks that require multiple steps rather than simply responding to individual commands.
That added capability is likely to increase the amount of cloud processing required for some requests, making usage management increasingly important as adoption grows.
What Apple Intelligence Usage Limits Mean for Users
For most people, the change may not be noticeable during ordinary use. But the limits could become more relevant when demand is high or when you’re making particularly complex AI requests.
You may eventually encounter a message telling you that you’ve reached a temporary limit and need to wait before using a feature again.
Alternatively, Apple may give you the option to pay for additional access if you need to continue using the service immediately.
The exact experience will depend on the feature, Apple’s server capacity and the usage policies attached to each service.
Apple is expected to provide more information about the limits and potential pricing as the 2027 software rollout gets closer. For now, the broader message is clear: Apple Intelligence is expanding, but unlimited access to its most demanding AI features may not be part of the package.
