The artificial intelligence race has reached another controversial milestone after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declared that the latest version of ChatGPT represents the arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Huang’s comments came shortly after OpenAI introduced its latest AI model, GPT-6, reportedly known as ChatGPT Astra, which has delivered impressive results across a range of demanding benchmarks. The model is being positioned as a major advancement in AI capabilities, with OpenAI highlighting improvements in computer use, software development, cybersecurity, scientific research, browsing, and professional tasks.

If AI systems can reliably complete complicated workflows with minimal human supervision, businesses could begin using them for a much wider range of tasks.

Software development, research, customer support, administration, content production, data analysis, cybersecurity, and other professional services could all be affected.

For consumers, increasingly capable AI assistants could also change how people interact with computers.

Instead of manually opening several applications to complete a task, users could eventually describe what they want and allow an AI agent to coordinate the necessary steps.

That possibility is one of the reasons Nvidia, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, and other major technology companies are investing heavily in AI infrastructure and agent-based systems.

The AGI Debate Is Far From Over

Jensen Huang’s declaration that AGI has arrived is likely to remain controversial.

The latest ChatGPT model appears to represent a substantial improvement in AI performance, and independent benchmark results suggest that frontier AI systems are becoming increasingly capable.

But whether those achievements meet the broader definition of artificial general intelligence remains an open question.

For now, it may be more accurate to describe this period as a major step toward increasingly autonomous and general-purpose AI rather than a universally accepted arrival of AGI.

The coming years will provide a much clearer test.

If these systems can consistently operate across unfamiliar environments, learn new tasks independently, reason reliably, use computers effectively, and outperform humans across a broad range of economically valuable activities, the argument for AGI will become much stronger.

Until then, the industry’s boldest claims will continue to face equally strong skepticism.

One thing, however, is becoming increasingly difficult to dispute: AI is moving rapidly from answering questions to actually doing work, and the latest generation of ChatGPT could mark another major step in that transformation.
