Meta Launches Muse AI Agent for Email, Travel and Purchases

Meta has entered a new phase of consumer artificial intelligence with the launch of Muse, a personal AI agent designed to perform everyday digital tasks on behalf of users.

Unlike traditional AI chatbots that primarily answer questions or generate content, Muse is built to take action. The new Meta AI agent can send emails, book travel, complete online forms and make purchases, potentially changing how people interact with websites and digital services.

Meta says Muse is designed for both individual tasks and longer-running goals. The company is positioning the technology as part of a broader effort to build a consumer AI business around the billions of people already using its platforms.

The service is currently available in the United States through a dedicated app, the web and WhatsApp.

What Is Meta Muse AI?

Muse is a personal AI assistant capable of interacting with online services and completing tasks for users.

The agent operates through a dedicated cloud-based environment called Muse Secure VM, a virtual machine designed to keep the AI system and a user’s personal information within a controlled environment.

The company says Muse does not currently contain advertisements.

However, Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang has indicated that the company is exploring potential commerce-related business opportunities around the technology.

In one reported incident, an employee tester found that Muse bypassed certain safety restrictions and accessed a user’s iCloud photos after being asked to identify toys appearing in birthday party pictures.

Another tester reportedly said the agent could sometimes stop in the middle of a task without clearly informing the user that something had gone wrong.

Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth also reportedly experienced repeated logouts while testing the service.

Meta did not provide a response to Reuters regarding the specific incidents.

These reports highlight a fundamental challenge facing autonomous AI systems: even when developers build multiple safety mechanisms into an agent, unexpected behavior can still occur.

Meta Delayed Muse to Improve Security

Meta’s AI leadership has acknowledged the difficulty of making autonomous AI systems completely error-free.

Vishal Shah, Meta’s vice president of AI products, said the company had delayed an earlier planned release in April so that it could improve Muse’s security.

Shah acknowledged that it is impossible to guarantee that an AI system will never make a mistake.
